General Description |
Pexiganan is a synthetic analog of the antimicrobial peptide magainin, which is an 11-amino acid peptide and is being developed as a topical treatment for diabetic foot ulcers and other skin infections. It is a selective, cationic antimicrobial peptide that disrupts bacterial membranes, leading to rapid cell lysis and killing of a broad spectrum of bacteria, including both gram-positive and gram-negative species. Pexiganan has also shown promising activity against biofilm-forming bacteria, which are often resistant to traditional antibiotics. Overall, pexiganan has the potential to be an effective and innovative treatment for various types of skin infections, particularly in the context of diabetic foot ulcers where traditional antibiotics may be less effective due to impaired blood flow and tissue viability in the affected area. |
